Protect Critical Processes with Custom-Engineered Air and Cleanroom Solutions
In pharmaceutical and bio-pharmaceutical manufacturing, environmental control is inseparable from product quality, production continuity, and regulatory confidence. A temperature or humidity excursion, contamination concern, or unexpected shutdown can affect far more than one piece of equipment.
Nortek Air Solutions works with consulting engineers, architects, building owners, and facility teams to develop air handling, DX, cleanroom, coil, and lifecycle solutions around the specific requirements of each application. From new manufacturing capacity to complex retrofits, we help project teams address the technical details that matter, before they become operational problems.
Your Requirements Shape the Solution
Life sciences facilities are often governed by detailed corporate standards built around years of operating experience. A specific filter size, light fixture, sensor, material, access arrangement, test port, or control component may be important because it supports maintenance consistency, spare-parts availability, validation procedures, or lessons learned from an earlier project.
We don't ask you to compromise. We work with you to build a custom solution that fits your needs:
Facility and process environmental criteria
Temperature and humidity control requirements
Required airflow and room pressure relationships
Normal, setback, emergency, and failure-mode operation
Filtration stages and associated pressure drop
Cleanability and material requirements
Casing leakage and deflection criteria
Equipment and component redundancy
Existing component standards
Service and maintenance access
Factory testing requirements
Dimensional, structural, shipping, and field-access constraints
Current needs and future expansion plans
The result is a solution configured around what the project must accomplish, not simply what is easiest to manufacture.
Air handling and DX
Custom air handling and DX systems form the environmental-control foundation for production suites, laboratories, process-support areas, storage environments, and the spaces surrounding controlled environments.
Nortek Air Solutions can configure air handling and DX systems to help support:
Life sciences applications may require narrow temperature and humidity ranges, low leaving-air temperatures, or dedicated dehumidification strategies. Coil selections, air quantities, casing performance, controls, and operating modes must be considered as an integrated system.
Thermal bridging and through-metal construction can create cold surface conditions that contribute to unwanted condensation. Our thermal-break options are designed to reduce through-metal heat transfer and help limit the potential for casing sweating when properly selected for the project’s operating and ambient conditions.
Fan arrays can provide multiple fans sharing the load, while unit and compressor arrangements can be configured around project-specific redundancy requirements. The appropriate strategy depends on the process, system architecture, available backup capacity, and consequences of an individual component or unit being offline.
Available configurations support pre-filtration, final filtration, HEPA filtration, gasketed sealing options, stainless or galvanized filter frames, UV-C, and other project-specific air-quality features. Fan selection should account for the pressure drop created by the full filtration system at both initial and final conditions.
Casing leakage and deflection affect energy performance, environmental control, and confidence in the air system. Construction, wall thickness, insulation, materials, unit dimensions, pressure class, and test requirements should be evaluated together rather than treated as isolated specification items.
Factory wiring, single-point electrical arrangements, watertight conduit, application-appropriate enclosures, VFDs, junction boxes, and raceways can help reduce field coordination and avoid unnecessary penetrations through the unit casing.
Aluminum, stainless steel, coated surfaces, and other material options can be evaluated based on the airstream, cleaning procedures, corrosion exposure, location, and owner standards.
Cleanroom Solutions
It's important that the cleanroom's ceiling system, wall construction, air-delivery components, filtration, pressure relationships, maintenance access, utilities, and supporting HVAC function as one controlled environment.
Nortek Cleanroom Solutions offers cleanroom and controlled-environment solutions that can be configured for pharmaceutical, biotechnology, cell and gene therapy, medical-device, laboratory, and research applications.
Modular cleanrooms in hardwall, stretchwall, and softwall configurations
Modular and stick-built ceiling systems
Cleanroom plenums
Fan filter units
Makeup-air and recirculating-air systems
By coordinating the air system and cleanroom strategy earlier in the project, teams can reduce handoffs, identify interface concerns sooner, and create a more cohesive approach to environmental performance, installation, and long-term maintenance.
Retrofit Projects
Much of the work in established life sciences facilities involves renovating, expanding, or replacing equipment within existing structures. New equipment must accommodate the available footprint, access route, structural conditions, shutdown window, and adjacent operations.
Nortek Air Solutions can configure equipment to precise dimensional constraints and offer factory or field knockdown construction, modular fan cubes that can move through existing access points, multiple shipping sections, and field-reassembly planning. Retrofit projects can also incorporate replacement coils, fan and controls upgrades, owner-preferred components where appropriate, service access from multiple directions, and optional factory-provided site supervision.
Early coordination helps project teams identify potential conflicts before equipment arrives and reduces the risk of unexpected field modifications.
Support Beyond Startup
The HVAC system must continue to perform after commissioning as processes change, components age, and facilities expand. Our aftermarket service, parts, and coil capabilities can support those evolving needs through replacement and custom coils, fan retrofits, controls modernization, equipment upgrades, replacement parts, and inspection and maintenance planning. We can also help modernize aging systems, identify strategies to extend useful equipment life, and plan for full-unit replacement when continued repair is no longer the best path.
Designing for serviceability from the outset can make inspections, cleaning, component replacement, and future upgrades less disruptive throughout the life of the facility.
